Grade K Lego Sculptures!

After students made these sculptures they drew them from observation.

Grade 4: Meaningful Sculptures!

Grade 4 students learned about artist Amy Mahnick who was inspired by images of baby birds to create sculptures out of milk cartons.  One day, while washing a milk carton, Amy noticed how it kind of looked like a baby bird with its mouth open waiting to be fed.  Amy could relate to this feeling of vulnerability as she had just moved to Brooklyn New York and was finding her way as an artists.  Amy decided to create sculptures with the milk cartons and then make paintings of them from observation.  Check out her amazing sculptures and paintings below.

Students were asked to think about what type of meaning they could give to their own milk gallon sculptures. They worked hard using sculpture attachment techniques so their sculptures would be strong and last for a long time.  They will paint their sculptures from observation soon.

The student above bent his sculpture and made it into a puppet!

Grade 3: Inventive Color & Inner Self Portrait Accordion Books

Students learned how artists use inventive color. They watched this video of artist Eric Carl and learned how he was inspired to paint a horse blue.

Grade 5: Fearless Artists

In this class students were challenged to draw fearlessly with permanent markers. They were shown a video of artist Janine Antoni who taught herself how to walk a tightrope. While practicing walking the tightrope Antoni said she learned "how to be comfortable with being uncomfortable."
